Companies have been mining QLD for coal since the discovery of the Bowen Basin. This is the largest coal reserve in the country. It is one of the world's largest deposits of the bituminous coal used to fuel steel mills and power plants.
There are currently 34 operational coal mines in the basin, which covers an area of approximately 60,000 square kilometers in Central Queensland. The mines are a source of jobs and money for the residents of Collinsville, Theodore and other nearby towns.
About 85% of Australia's electricity comes from the coal it produces, even though 2/3 of the coal produced is exported. Most goes to Asia.
There are coalmines in every state. Queensland just happens to have the largest number of any single area.
Gold, copper, zinc, lead, bauxite and silver mines can also be found in the state. The mines are one of the state's primary industries. They are also responsible for some of the secondary industries. For example, bauxite is converted into alumina at the coastal city of Gladstone.
The industry is one of the state's largest employers. As it continues to grow, new jobs become available on a regular basis.
The Fairview and Scotia gas fields are related industries. Mining QLD for natural gas and oil has been going on for decades. The pipeline from Fairview to Wallumbilla is still under construction. As a result, there are still many construction jobs in the area.
Truck driving is another employment option related to the industry. HR (Heavy Rigid) licenses are required to operate most trucks, as well as the heavy machinery used in the industry.
Because of the need for drivers, there are many companies that provide training courses. Most mines prefer to hire drivers that have already been trained, although a few are willing to provide the training, if a person has experience in mining QLD.
Many tradesmen and skilled workers are employed by the mines. It is possible to take a few courses and then work as an apprentice until you become more experienced. Many workers start out that way.
Today's mines focus on safe operations. Many of the accidents that have occurred in the past can be blamed on miner error or ignoring safety rules. For this reason a Mining and Resource Contractors Safety Training Association or general Mining Induction accreditation is often a pre-hiring requirement.
Mining QLD is a career that many people enjoy. More are expected to sign on in the coming years.
